Why Jim Thorpe Is the Perfect Local Getaway
Jim Thorpe is the kind of town that reminds you adventure doesn’t always require a plane ticket. Often referred to as the little Switzerland of America for its European style Alpine village feel and mountainous terrain. Sometimes the best memories are sitting just a couple hours from home, hidden in the mountains of Pennsylvania, waiting for a rainy weekend to explore.
Nestled in the Pocono Mountains, Jim Thorpe is about 2 hours from Philadelphia and roughly 2 hours from New York City, making it the perfect weekend getaway or spontaneous day trip. Even though we visited over Mother’s Day weekend in non-stop rain, it made the town feel even cozier. The weather may have been gloomy, but the memories definitely were not.
Where to Park in Jim Thorpe
One of the best parts about visiting Jim Thorpe is how walkable everything is. Paid parking is available right at the train station for $25, which makes it incredibly easy to park once and spend the day exploring the charming downtown streets filled with cafés, shops, and historic buildings.

Our first stop was Muggles’ Mug, a Harry Potter-inspired coffee shop that instantly won over my entire family. The Butterbrew Latte was absolutely incredible. It was warm, not too sweet, and comforting in the best way possible on this rainy day. My boys ordered hot chocolate, and it may have been one of the best hot chocolates we’ve ever had. Sorry, Dunkin Donuts. Rich, creamy, and perfect for a cold rainy day. Both my boys asked for more.
The Best Donuts in Jim Thorpe: Donerds Donuts
Six donuts later and I’m still thinking about the Crème Brûlée. If you’re visiting Jim Thorpe, PA, Donerds Donuts is a must-stop for specialty donuts.
Directly across the street we made what might have been the best decision of the entire trip: Donerds Donuts.
If you visit Jim Thorpe and skip these donuts, you are making a huge mistake.
While they offer traditional favorites like glazed and Boston cream, the specialty donuts completely stole the show. We tried the Crème Brûlée, Cannoli, and Strawberry French Toast donuts, and every single one was unreal. The Crème Brûlée was easily my favorite. Absolute chef’s kiss perfection. Soft, rich, perfectly sweet, and even better paired with coffee on a rainy mountain morning.
Pro tip: grab donuts before hopping on the train because they make the perfect snack for the ride.
The Mansion That Inspired Disney’s Haunted Mansion
Proof that Disney magic can be found in the most unexpected places.
As we wandered through the rainy streets of Jim Thorpe, we passed the historic Harry Packer Mansion. This stunning Victorian mansion said to have helped inspire Disney’s Haunted Mansion. Between the dark skies, foggy mountain air, and dramatic architecture, it felt like I was about to hop on the Haunted Mansion ride. I love finding little pieces of Disney hidden around the world, especially in unexpected places like this. The rain made the experience even better, giving the mansion those eerie Haunted Mansion vibes that made me want to stop and stare for a while.
Riding the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

The main attraction in town is the historic Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, and it lived up to the hype. Originally part of the railroad system that helped transport anthracite coal through Pennsylvania during the industrial era, the railway now gives visitors a chance to experience the breathtaking landscapes of the Lehigh Gorge from beautifully restored passenger cars.
Since my boys are completely train obsessed, this was the highlight of the trip for them. We decided to splurge on Dome Car tickets and they were 100% worth it. The panoramic windows gave incredible views of the Lehigh Valley, even through the rain and fog. I could only imagine how stunning this ride must be in the Fall when the mountains explode with autumn colors. I already know we’ll be back to experience it during peak foliage season…if we can get tickets.
Pro Tip: This train ride sells out fast in the Fall and is first come first serve. Make sure to get there early to secure your tickets.
Exploring the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum

After the train ride, we drove about 15 minutes to No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum, and this ended up being one of the most unexpectedly fascinating parts of the entire day trip.
I honestly had no idea what to expect. I just knew my boys would probably enjoy going deep into the mines.
What we got was an experience that far exceeded expectations.
For around $15 per person, you get access to the museum, a mine train ride 1,600 feet into the mountain, and a guided walking tour through the actual coal mine. The tour lasts a little over an hour and gives you an incredible look into the history of coal mining in Pennsylvania and the harsh realities miners once faced daily.
A few things to know before visiting:
Wear shoes you don’t mind getting muddy
Expect your pants to get dirty, especially on rainy days
Bring a sweatshirt or jacket because the mine stays a constant 52 degrees year-round
It was educational, immersive, and surprisingly emotional at times. Walking through those tunnels made history feel real in a way textbooks never could. My boys loved every second of it, and so did I.
By the end of the day, the rain was getting heavier, our shoes were soaked, and everyone was covered in a mix of mud, powdered sugar, and exhaustion. So we headed home to dry off and warm up.
Is Jim Thorpe Worth Visiting?
That imperfect rainy day became one of my favorite local adventures we’ve taken in a long time. It was a perfect Mother’s Day and I can’t wait to visit again soon.
This trip reminded me that exploration doesn’t always have to mean boarding a plane or planning some elaborate vacation. There is so much beauty, history, and adventure sitting right in our own backyard if we’re willing to slow down and discover it.
Sometimes happiness in the mess looks like rainy train rides, muddy sneakers, warm coffee, and crème brûlée donuts in a tiny mountain town.
