Grandma’s Taralli al Limone: The Cookie That Tastes Like Home
Some recipes are more than recipes.
They’re time machines.
Every time I make my grandma’s Taralli al Limone cookies, I’m transported back to family gatherings filled with laughter, crowded tables, and the comforting feeling of being surrounded by the people I loved most.
These simple Italian lemon cookies were a staple at every holiday. Whether it was Christmas, Easter, or a Sunday spent with family, there was always a tray of taralli waiting in the kitchen. Their sweet lemon glaze and soft, cake-like texture became a familiar part of our celebrations. They’re something I could always count on seeing at the dessert table.
As a child, I don’t think I fully appreciated them.
They were just Grandma’s cookies.
Now, they’re so much more.
As I’ve gotten older and many of the people from those gatherings have passed on, I’ve realized that recipes like this carry something far more valuable than ingredients. They carry memories. They preserve traditions. They keep pieces of the people we love alive long after they’re gone.
It’s amazing how something as simple as a cookie can unlock moments you thought you had forgotten. The smell of fresh lemon zest instantly brings back images of my grandmother in the kitchen. One bite reminds me of holiday dinners and conversations around the table that seemed like they would last forever.
Food has a way of connecting us to our roots in a way few other things can.
These Taralli al Limone cookies remind me where I come from. They remind me of family, tradition, and the love that was poured into every meal shared together. They remind me that home isn’t always a place. Sometimes it’s a recipe.
Today, when I make these cookies, I’m not just baking a dessert. I’m carrying on a tradition. I’m preserving a small piece of my family’s story and creating new memories to share with my own children.
And while I would give anything to sit at my grandmother’s table one more time, making these cookies is the next best thing.
Because with every bite, she’s still here.
That’s the magic of family recipes.
They don’t just feed us.
They bring us home.

minutesIngredients
- Dough
2 Tbsp unsalted butter
6 tsp baking powder
6 tsp sugar
6 eggs
1/2 tsp salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
(Optional) anise or lemon zest
- Lemon Icing
1 egg white
1 1/2 cups cane sugar
juice of 1 lemon
Directions
- Cookie Dough
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line baking sheet with parchmant paper.
- With a stand mixer, mix butter and sugar. Beat eggs and add to butter mixture.
- In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Combine all ingredients in large bowl and mix until it forms a soft dough.
- (Optional) Add Anise or lemon zest to dough for taste. I prefer lemon zest for the ultimate lemon flavored cookie.
- Lightly flour your hands and roll out the dough into 6 inch ropes about 1/2 inch thick. Twist the dough to form a knot shape.
- Place them 2 inches apart on a baking sheet. Bake the cookies for 8 to 10 minutes or until they begin to brown on the bottom. Remove from the oven and let cool completely before icing them.
- Lemon Icing
- Mix 1 egg white, juice of 1 lemon, and 1 1/2 cups cane sugar together in a mixing bowl.
- Once cookies are completely cooled, dip the tops of the cookies into the lemon icing.
- Place the cookies on a wire rack to allow the icing to harden. Place the wire rack over a baking sheet to collect the excess icing that drips.
