Where to Eat in Rome: 5 Restaurants Worth Every Bite

The Restaurants That Made Me Slow Down and Savor Rome

Happiness in the Mess has always been about finding joy in the moments that pull you back into yourself again. Sometimes that looks like healing. Sometimes it looks like travel. And sometimes it looks like sitting at a candlelit table in Rome with fresh pasta, flowing wine, and nowhere else to be.

One of my favorite things about traveling through Rome was how intentional every meal felt. Dinner wasn’t rushed. People lingered. Conversations stretched for hours. Wine kept flowing. Meals became memories.

If you’re searching for the best restaurants in Rome, these are the five places I genuinely cannot stop thinking about. From unforgettable truffle beef filet to cozy wine bars and historic dining rooms, these restaurants made me fall in love with the city one bite at a time.

1. Taverna Lucifero

The Best Meal I Had in Rome

Out of every restaurant we visited in Rome, this one completely stole my heart.

From the moment we walked into Taverna Lucifero, the atmosphere felt warm, intimate, and welcoming. The staff treated us like family, constantly pouring wine, offering recommendations, and making the entire experience feel personal instead of transactional. I appreciated how the owner spoke with every table and got to know us. We laughed, we ate, and we had the meal of our lives truly savoring every bite.

And the food? Unforgettable.

The truffle dishes were rich and decadent without feeling heavy, the cheese fondue was pure comfort, and every course managed to outdo the last. This wasn’t just one of the best restaurants in Rome for me, it may genuinely have been one of the best meals of my life. I tell everyone to go here when visiting Rome.

It reminded me why food matters so much when traveling. Not just because of taste, but because of how deeply a meal can make you feel present in a moment.

4. Ristorante Pancrazio dal 1922

Historic Dining in the Heart of Rome

Built upon ancient ruins connected to the Theatre of Pompey, this restaurant offers one of the most unique dining experiences in Rome. You have the option to dine outside, however for this particular restaurant, the underground is where you want to eat. Sitting in vaulted stone chambers, surrounded by centuries of history while eating handmade pasta was a magical experience. I recommend exploring the area either before or after you dine to understand the history of this restaurant. Don’t forget to take a peek at all the underground rooms in this restaurant before you leave. It is all truly fascinating.

The atmosphere is elegant and timeless, with classic Roman dishes that feel deeply rooted in tradition.

This restaurant reminded me that one of the most beautiful parts of travel is realizing how connected we are to places, stories, and generations before us.

5. Ercoli 1928

The Perfect Wine Bar and Aperitivo Spot in Rome

We originally stopped in for wine and small plates on a food tour and ended up staying for an hour. Between the incredible charcuterie boards, endless wine options, and cozy atmosphere, it quickly became one of my favorite spots in the Trastevere neighborhood. Ercoli is a hybrid between gourmet deli, sit down dining, and bakery.

Ercoli is modern, large, and filled with authentic Roman options. I absolutely loved their Panzanella salad of fresh Roman tomatoes and oil soaked bread. Because they focus on seasonal dishes, the Panzanella salad may not be available year round.

For me, Happiness in the Mess is really about learning to romanticize the small moments. Slowing down enough to actually experience your life while it’s happening.

  • Wine flights
